Main Treatments

1- Bone Marrow Transplantation

We are specialists in bone marrow, umbilical cord blood or peripheral blood transplants in children. In the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit we attend to those children who, at some point in the treatment of their illness, require a bone marrow, umbilical cord blood or peripheral blood transplant. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a key treatment in curing many children who present:

  • Hematological and oncological illnesses
  • Genetic illnesses: immunodeficiencies, haemopathies and metabolopathies

When a patient requires a transplant, it is important for highly specialised professionals to analyse his/her case in detail. Our Unit is devoted exclusively to pediatric bone marrow transplants.

2- Oncology and Haematology

The SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital’s Oncology and Haematology Department is the national reference centre of for the treatment of developmental cancer and an international reference centre for determined types of tumors.

We strive to offer the patient the best possible treatment with the standards of the best hospitals in the world. • High level of technology.
  • The patient at the centre of all our activity.

Activity in the Genetic and Molecular Medicine Department at the SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital focuses on genetic diseases appearing in infancy and adolescence. We receive consultations from all of the Hospital’s departments. We maintain constant scientific collaboration with the Neurology and Neonatology Departments, as well as with Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Fetal Medicine (BCNatal), since, in our Department, we perform the tests necessary for antenatal genetic and reproductive diagnosis. We work closely with the Pediatric Institut for Rare Diseases (IPER) and we form part of the group of diagnostic laboratories used by the Hospital. We perform genetic and genomic analyses for diagnosis and genetic counselling of our patients, as well as for our researchers.

6- Rare Diseases

here at the SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital we treat complex patients referred from all over Catalonia, Spain and other parts of the world. Among these, for many years we have traditionally treated a considerable number of children suffering from rare diseases, which affect fewer than 5 people per 10,000 inhabitants. The SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital is one of the three member centers of the first network of specialist clinical units (XUEC in Catalan) for the care of minority diseases created by the Catalan Health Service. We have experience in more than 1, 200 types of rare diseases, three quarters of which affect fewer than 4 children, and are recognised as ultra-rare. Thus, we are one of the most experienced centres in Spain in dealing clinically with these pathologies. This extensive experience makes us unique, and accordingly, in 2015, the Hospital established a specific transversal Department, the Pediatric Institut for Rare Diseases (IPER), with the objective of making progress in the treatment of and research into rare diseases.

We are a recognised centre in Spain through the certification of national reference centre. We have a track record spanning more than 40 years, endorsed and acknowledged within Spain, and increasingly beyond our borders, from where paediatricians from many countries, particularly from Central and South America, request specialisation visits. We are co-founders of the Spanish Paediatric Nephrology Society and members from the beginning. We work closely with the Spanish Nephrology Society (SEN) as well in those aspects concerning paediatric pathology.

8- Surgery

In the SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital’ Surgery Department we treat all surgical pathologies: malformations, infectious, inflammatory or oncological nature from the general, digestive, thoracic, urological, plastic and maxillofacial areas in children and adolescents. This care includes a wide range of procedures, from the simplest, which can be conducted as an outpatient, to the most complex. The Hospital has an impressive antenatal diagnosis programme, making it possible to plan the most suitable treatment for different congenital pathologies, including fetal therapy intrapartum surgery and postnatal surgery. In recent years, our Department has been prominent in the implementation and development of different procedures, particularly in minimally invasive surgery. The ultimate aim of these innovative techniques is to obtain the best clinical results, lower surgical aggression, swifter recovery, and the incorporation of patients and their families to normal activity.
